Honed or polished concrete outdoors? Slip, sun and coastal sand

Outdoors, honed almost always wins. Why matte concrete is the choice for pool surrounds, patios and entries on the coast, and what sun, salt air and sand do to any sealed surface.

The short answer: hone it. A polished, high-gloss finish belongs indoors. Outdoors, a honed matte finish is safer underfoot, easier on the eyes, and far more forgiving of the wear an outdoor floor gets.

Slip

A honed surface keeps the texture of the concrete. A penetrating sealer soaks in rather than leaving a slick layer on top. Around pools, showers and anywhere that gets wet, that matters. If a project needs a specific slip rating - common around pools and in commercial work - the finished surface can be tested to the Australian standard, and we can add a treatment if needed. Sun and glare

A reflective floor in full Queensland sun is hard to look at. Matte concrete scatters light instead of bouncing it back. Any concrete in full sun gets warm, but a lighter mix stays cooler than a dark one - worth thinking about at plans stage.

Sand and salt air

Sand underfoot is what wears sealer, not footsteps. A house near the beach wears a floor faster than the same house inland. That is another reason to choose a matte finish outside: wear shows far less on matte than on gloss. Expect to reseal outdoor and wet areas more often than interiors - our reseal guide has the intervals.

Coating or penetrating sealer?

Coatings sit on top and can be slippery when wet. They also wear in traffic lanes and, outdoors, can lift or flake. A penetrating sealer goes into the concrete and wears gradually, so a reseal is simple. For honed outdoor areas we use penetrating sealers.

Where honed works best

  • Pool surrounds and coping
  • Patios, alfresco areas and outdoor kitchens
  • Entries, paths and driveways
  • Benches, seats and planters around the outdoor area

If you are pouring the outdoor slab and the interior at the same time, it is worth deciding both finishes together. A satin interior running out to a honed patio, in the same mix, looks like one continuous floor.
